The Danish Christian Trade Union Movement believes that the days of the unemployed having to trek through rain and sleet to 'sign on' are well and truly over. These days, unemployment benefit is just a text message away - freeing up time for the unemployed to find a job. As the first unemployment fund in the country, the Christian Trade Union Movement introduced the opportunity for the unemployed to submit their benefit claims by text message.
With a text message unemployment card, the unemployed are spared having to go to the job centre with their unemployment card. The solution is based on a registration module on the unemployment fund's website. Upon registration, the benefit recipient receives a PIN code that has to be used every time they contact the unemployment fund.
Once a month, the unemployed person receives a text message from the unemployment fund asking whether he/she has been available for work throughout the whole period. The recipient responds by text message and, finally, receives a message telling him/her that the unemployment benefit will be paid out on the last day of the month. The solution has been approved by the National Directorate of Labour.
Accessibility is the be all and end all for us. We need to be there when our members need us. The text message unemployment card is just one of a number of initiatives that make our members' day-to-day lives a bit easier. When you are unemployed, you cannot afford to use all your energy filling in papers, you should be able to concentrate on finding work. Therefore, this solution is an important step for us, says Jesper Wengel, Managing Director of the Christian Trade Union Movement.
